Have you ever read a Scripture verse in the English and thought it was great, but then you see it in the original language and it becomes even more powerful?? Example:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.” ”O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” -1 Corinthians 15:55 ESV
“Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from death? O death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your sting? Compassion is hidden from my eyes.” – Hoshea 13:14 ESV
“From the hand of Sheol I will ransom them. From death I will redeem them. I will be your plague, O death. I will be your pestilence, O Sheol. Comfort will be hidden from my eyes.” – Hoshea 13:14 Hebrew
WOW! Those are not questions in the Hebrew, but statements! What does this mean? God is going to destroy death. He will have no mercy or comfort for death…it will be completely destroyed. He will redeem from Sheol…this is talking about resurrection!
Here are two more verses that go with the thought of death being completely destroyed:
Isaiah 25:8 ESV – He will swallow up death forever and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.
Isaiah 27:1 ESV – In that day the LORD with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea. Leviathan was the symbol of death.
